Cognitive health is an important measurement of a healthy and thriving brain function. The healthier our brain - the better we can focus, do things with clarity of mind, and have enduring energy. It is also the absence of brain fog, low attention span, and general low interest in life. To ensure that we have excellent cognitive health, we have to pay extra attention to our nutrition. Specifically, foods that are rich in brain-healthy nutrients can allow our brains to thrive. Dieticians have always advised that eating a balanced meal with proteins, complex carbohydrates, fats, fruits, and vegetables is key. We also need to allow our brain to have the necessary intake of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that can provide for alertness and mental sharpness.
Recent health development has shown links between inflammation and brain health. Besides brain injury, diseases, and old age being linked to cognitive decline, there is growing evidence that inflammation plays a key role too. Short-term inflammation is a normal part of our immune response, but chronic inflammation can do serious harm as it can persist for years. This will then gradually lead to damaging healthy brain tissues and neurons. (Schmidt, 2024) Also, inflammation is one of the main causes of many neurodegenerative diseases. (Zheng et al., 2023)
